Don’t do a full year, that’s not good
Once you take them, do them carefully and use oil when removing them from your hair since all that shedding is still intact in your hair and can lead to bigger breakage.

You’re asking for your hair to clump and break more easily once you take it down. Instead, keep them in max two months, but you should still wash your scalp regularly otherwise it’ll affect your real hair. Do weekly oiling of your scalp and wear a bonnet to sleep to help it not friz
